Kuwait Condemns UN Reports for Failing to Condemn Iranian Aggression

Kuwait today expressed its rejection of the lack of clear condemnation of the Iranian aggression against its territory and the targeting of civilians in the region in the reports issued by both the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran and the International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, describing the Iranian attacks as 'retaliatory strikes'. This was stated in a speech delivered by Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Nasser Al-Hayyan, within the framework of the joint interactive dialogue between the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran and the International Fact-Finding Mission, as part of the work of the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Ambassador Al-Hayyan stressed that 'such a formulation would legitimize these unjustified and illegal hostile acts carried out by Iran against the State of Kuwait and countries in the region.' He demanded the condemnation of the sinful Iranian attack in the strongest terms, affirming that any threat or aggression targeting one of the countries in the region is a threat to its collective security, an unacceptable and unjustified escalation, and a clear violation of all international covenants and laws. Ambassador Al-Hayhan clarified that the UN Security Council adopted resolution 2817, affirming the crime committed by Iran against countries in the region, which condemned the Iranian attacks on them in the strongest terms and stressed the need to respect the sovereignty of States and the rejection of targeting civilians. In the same context, the State of Kuwait renewed its condemnation of the sinful Iranian aggression, raising from the podium of the UN Human Rights Council the highest expressions of condolences and sympathy to the families of the martyrs from among the sons of the homeland and the region as a result of this blatant attack. The Kuwaiti ambassador also reaffirmed the inalienable right to self-defense in accordance with article 51 of the UN Charter. On Monday, the UN Human Rights Council held a meeting with the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran and the Fact-Finding Mission on Iran to discuss the deterioration of the human rights situation, following the security campaign launched by the Iranian authorities during a wave of protests witnessed in Iran.
