Kuwaiti Student Ranks Second Globally in Civil Engineering

Maryam Al-Rifai, an engineering student at Kuwait University, has secured second place worldwide by the American Society of Civil Engineers, making her the first Gulf woman in the top ten globally.


Kuwaiti Student Ranks Second Globally in Civil Engineering

Maria Muayed Rafai, a student of the Faculty of Engineering and Petroleum of Kuwait University, ranked second in the world ranking by the American Association of Civil Engineers and became the first Kuwaiti and resident of the Persian Gulf to enter the list of the top 10 students in the field of civil engineering globally.

At the recent annual awards ceremony, the American Association selected Rafai to support students in the civil engineering field to encourage development and active participation in their communities.

"The American Association announced the beginning of the application acceptance for students of civil engineering from all universities worldwide through the presentation of a resume, containing all achievements, activities, and contributions, submitted by the student in their university education, whether in educational institutions or beyond," Rafai said, finishing Kuwait University in 2024-2025.

She added that "the association poses questions to candidates that help them understand the student’s personality, their ambitions, and vision, based on which the top 10 candidates are selected, creating an annual list of the best 10 students in the field of civil engineering globally," emphasizing the support of her mentors.
